Here's a brief description of Uncle
Calvin's - please go to their new website for detailed information on when the
shows are and who's playing next!
(The following was unceremoniously
'liberated' from the North Texas Music Foundation website at: http://www.tahperd.sfasu.edu/ntmf/ntmf.html )
Over the past fifteen years, Uncle Calvin's
has become a cherished venue of Dallas folk-music lovers. As newcomers join the
numbers of the faithful, one question inevitably arises:
Who is Uncle Calvin?
Our Uncle is Protestant reformer John Calvin
(1509-64), a pastor, teacher, scholar, and humanist. As our founder, Reverend
Trey Hammond, wrote, "We try to celebrate his lighter side."
The coffeehouse has been sponsored by
Northpark Presbyterian Church since its inception in November of 1982. Created
as an alternative to the nightclubs, its original mission was to provide a
place where original music could be heard in an intimate and warm environment.
Throughout our growth, our increased variety of music and performers, and our
move to Northpark's new building, we have tried to be consistent with that
mission.
As you've probably heard performers say from
our stage, Calvin's is a favorite on the folk circuit. We offer live music
nearly every Friday night featuring both nationally known and regional acts.
Admission is $6, unless noted, and $2 for kids under 12. In addition to the
entertainment, we serve up a delicious array of desserts and a variety of
non-alcoholic beverages.
We love to hear from you. Please let us know
what you think of our performers, who you would like to see play here, or any
other comments or suggestions you may have concerning any aspect of the
coffeehouse.
You may also call our concert line, (214) 363-0044, if you're interested in finding out about volunteer
opportunities.
Uncle Calvin's is located in the Northpark
Presbyterian Church, 9555 N.Central Expwy, Dallas.
